Drinkbox Studios' upcoming brain-eating bonanza is going to need some more time in the oven.
Ozzie Mejia September 21, 2026 12:05 PM Drinkbox Studios 1The brain-eating Dark Souls-inspired Blighted will unfortunately miss its 2026 release window. Drinkbox Studios (Guacamelee, Severed, Nobody Saves the World) announced on Monday that its next title will need some additional development time before releasing. Its release date window has now been pushed back to an unspecified 2027 period.
"Before we get into the fun part of this devlog, we’d like to first address the fact that it is nearing the end of 2026 and Blighted still doesn’t have an official release date," Assistant Producer Josh Davis said on the Blighted Steam page. "The team has been working hard (and growing!) but we feel we still need a bit more time to polish and tune the game before launch. With this in mind, we’ve decided to shift our release to 2027. We appreciate your patience, and while we will have more news in the new year, we have one more really cool dev update before 2026 wraps that we think you'll want to keep an eye out for."
Blighted was last showcased during Nintendo's Indie World March 2026 showcase, where it had a Fall 2026 release window. The game is set in a world where an ancient tribe consumes seeds from its village's trees of memory in order to gain the memories and experiences of the departed. However, the tribe must now face the danger of the evil Sorcisto, who has begun eating live brains and becoming an increasingly twisted monster with each one that he eats. The game utilizes Souls-like combat mixed with some of the action-RPG mechanics found in previous Drinkbox hit Nobody Saves the World.

Ozzie Mejia Senior EditorOzzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
