Canceled Game Boy Color RPG Returns With Physical Release 24 Years Later

The Game Boy Color, despite only briefly being Nintendo's primary handheld console, is fondly remembered by many. It came in many different colors, and offered a variety of exclusive titles that are still fun to play today, like The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons, Pokémon Pinball, and Shantae.

The Game Boy Color was also home to quite a few spectacular RPGs, like Pokémon Crystal, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Crystalis. However, one planned RPG for the system was canceled and never released. Later this month, this scrapped title, Infinity, will finally be getting a physical release as a new game for the GBC.

The Nintendo Game Boy Color Gets a New RPG Game in September 2026

Originally developed by Affinix Software between1999 to 2001, Infinity is a turn-based RPG with a unique twist to the traditional combat system, and a standalone fantasy story. The game never officially came out but, now, courtesy of incube8 Games, it's finally receiving a physical release for the Game Boy Color.

"Infinity pushed the humble Game Boy Color to its absolute limits," the description on incube8 Games' website reads. "But as the handheld’s retail lifespan ended and the market shifted to the Game Boy Advance, publishing struggles mounted."

"The Affinix team eventually went their separate ways, and the project was formally canceled in 2002 — leaving Infinity as one of gaming’s great “what-ifs. Interest in this lost gem never faded. In 2016, an unfinished version was released as a free ROM, sparking renewed excitement among retro fans who saw Infinity as one of the last great Game Boy Color titles."

In 2021, incube8 Games launched a Kickstarter campaign to revive Infinity, acquired the rights to the game and, after receiving CA$ 370,823 from 3,458 backers, they completed the RPG. Now, after years of work, it's ready to hit the market.

The story of Infinity centers around an ancient evil corrupting a mystical land, manipulating two rival nations on the verge of war. Only a disgraced knight and his four party members stand a chance of preventing great bloodshed and putting an end to the mutual hate between the two peoples.

Infinity features tactical elements in its turn-based combat, a vast world with over 30 distinct areas, 15 hours of gameplay, more dialogue than Final Fantasy II, multiple difficulty settings, a vast array of items and spells to collect and customize one's characters with, and some of the most beautiful graphics on the Game Boy Color. For $59.99 USD, RPG fans will not only get a battery-free GBC cartridge of the game, but a sealed custom box, an instruction booklet, and a sticker sheet.
