Outbound has just given its peaceful road trip a new reason to slow down, stop the van and reach for the camera. The free Wildlife Update is now available on PC, PS5, Game Pass and Xbox Series X|S, adding a photography system, 34 animal species to discover and a new way to fill out your in-game journal.
The update arrives as the latest expansion to Square Glade Games’ cosy open-world adventure, following the previous Fishing Update. Nintendo Switch players won’t have to wait too long either, with the new content set to follow there soon.

Time To Go Wildlife Watching
Outbound has always been about taking things at your own pace, and the Wildlife Update feels like a natural excuse to do exactly that.
Across the game’s four distinct biomes, 34 different animal species can now be discovered. Rather than simply spotting them as you travel around, players can properly document their encounters thanks to a brand-new photography system.
The update introduces a Wildlife Outpost in the first biome. Find it and you’ll be able to download the blueprint for a craftable camera, giving you a new tool for exploring the world.
And this isn’t just a case of pointing and clicking. The camera comes with a range of settings, including exposure and brightness, depth of field focus points, saturation, contrast and zoom. Once you’ve captured something you’re happy with, your photographs are saved directly to your library.

The camera also gives Outbound’s existing journal a fresh purpose.
Animal entries now include previews, making it easier to work out which creatures you’ve already documented and which ones are still missing. The camera automatically detects animals in view too, so frame one correctly, snap the picture and that species will be added to a new collected section of your personal journal.
For a game built around wandering, exploring and discovering things without much pressure, it’s a nice little reason to pay closer attention to what’s moving around the world.
More Than Just A Camera
Photography might be the headline addition, but there are several other changes tucked into the Wildlife Update.
The binoculars have been given an upgrade, allowing players to use them for long-distance viewing when they don’t yet have access to the camera’s zoom. Building has also received a small but useful addition. A solid wooden foundation with a closed wooden floor is now available immediately from the build menu, with no blueprint required.
Then there are a few touches aimed at making the existing experience a little smoother. Following community feedback, the fishing interaction prompt will now only appear while the player is standing still. That should keep the HUD a little less cluttered while you’re wandering around or, appropriately enough, walking through water.
There are also some new collectibles to find, including Kickstarter backer-designed charms and some rather lovely animal-shaped plant pots for decorating your mobile home.
Outbound Keeps Expanding Its Cozy Road Trip
We gave Outbound 3.5/5 in our review, describing it as “A Cozy Road Trip That Takes Its Sweet Time”, while noting that the game’s various elements eventually come together nicely.
The Wildlife Update continues that gradual expansion, following on from the Fishing Update with another relaxed activity rather than attempting to completely reinvent the experience.
And given that we’ve previously looked at games that put photography at the heart of the experience, it’s particularly interesting to see Outbound now adding its own take on the idea. Here, though, grabbing the perfect shot is less about competition and more about giving you another reason to pull over and see what the world has to offer.
