In wake of long-time rumours that Sony is preparing to release the PS6 alongside a handheld companion, former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden has told KiwiTalkz that the hardware manufacturer has typically ‘really struggled’ when it comes to juggling two pieces of hardware at once.
Speaking on the rumoured PS6 handheld, which has been dubbed ‘Canis’ in previous reports, the former chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios noted, “The company really struggles to sell two different pieces of hardware at the same time.” Naturally, he predicted folk would ask about the PlayStation Portable, which was a big success, but added “Yes, and while we were doing that, I was struggling selling PS3.”
It’s not just development resources, it’s also marketing resources. You almost have to set up two different companies to do it, where neither one is worried about what the other one is doing, they’re just trying to be successful in their own right. When you have one company managing both, inevitably there’s stealing from Peter to pay Paul for something else, and ‘well, we’ll move that marketing program over to this other game which is going to be more successful than that game was.’ All the tradeoffs just sort of… you lose your focus on what [you’re] really trying to get done here.
“If Sony were to come out with a handheld, I guess maybe they just consolidate all their gaming activities around that mid-size platform,” he concluded.
Hardware insider Kepler_L2, who has long provided details on Sony’s next-generation system plans, stated back in August that a $600 price point for the PS6 handheld is “definitely not possible right now,” noting how “LPDDR memory is actually seeing the biggest price increases since it’s being used in a lot of data center products.”
Sony has yet to officially announce the PS6 but the company’s CEO recently stated that it hasn’t decided on a release date for any future hardware. However, an analyst firm has stated that Sony’s plans to stop production of physical game discs in January 2028 ‘almost guarantees‘ that the PS6 will not launch until 2028 at the earliest.
